A timeless craft meets modern design

KASANÉ is not just a keyboard — it is a statement of craftsmanship. Each frame is finished by hand with urushi, a Japanese lacquer art perfected over centuries. The result is a modern tool that carries the spirit of tradition into the digital age.

Learning from Traditional Craft Design

The design of KASANÉ draws inspiration from Japanese urushi lacquerware, where everyday vessels are shaped with graceful simplicity. Traditional lacquer bowls and trays were never ornate — their forms are curved, minimal, and easy to hold, created this way so the beauty of the lacquer's glossy, reflective depth could shine without distraction.

KASANÉ follows the same philosophy. Its silhouette is clean and understated, shaped to fit the human hand with ease, while subtle curves highlight the refined materials and finishes. This restraint allows the keyboard’s surface and tactile qualities to speak for themselves — transforming daily typing into a moment of quiet luxury.

Hand-Lacquered Layer by Layer

The making of each KASANE frame begins with the touch of an artisan's brush. Layer after layer, urushi is applied with precision, then left to cure slowly before being polished to a deep, glass-like finish. This is a process that cannot be rushed. Each coat requires time, care, and the steady hands of a master. Subtle variations in texture and depth make every frame one of a kind — a signature of the human touch.

Because every frame is finished entirely by hand, production is intentionally limited. Each KASANE keyboard is part of a numbered edition, marked with a small metal tag engraved with its unique identity — for example: KASANE – 001 / 100. This tag is a signature of rarity, linking every piece to its place in a very limited production run.

Rich Contrast in Harmony

With KASANÉ’s minimal form, the materials take center stage — especially the urushi lacquer. While objects are usually finished with one style, each KASANÉ variation combines two of three expressions: 艶 (Tsuya), a lustrous glossy coat; 錆 (Sabi), a tactile, opaque ground; and 澄 (Sumi), a transparent layer that reveals depth beneath. Their interplay of polished and rough, opaque and translucent, creates a refined harmony that elevates the keyboard into a sensory experience.

Why “KASANÉ”? The Depth of Layering

KASANÉ comes from the Japanese verb “kasaneru (かさねる)”, whose meaning shifts with the characters used. Each — “重ねる”, “套ねる”, “畳ねる”, and “複ねる” — adds a layer of significance that shapes the identity of this keyboard.

重ねる

to pile, repeat

Urushi is built coat by coat, each layer cured and polished to create depth. This repetition reflects patience, precision, and the timeless craft behind KASANÉ.

套ねる

to enclose, sheath

This nuance suggests wrapping and protection. The keyboard is sheathed not only in lacquer, but in the care that binds tradition with modern design.

畳ねる

to fold, overlap

Folding conveys harmony through overlap. Glossy, rough, and transparent finishes fold into one another, uniting contrasts in a single surface.

複ねる

to multiply, entwine

This character expresses layering as complexity. In KASANÉ, digital function and artisanal craft entwine, multiplying everyday utility with elegance and luxury.

Dialogue between past and future

A Dialogue Between Past and Future

Urushi is an ancient craft. A keyboard is a modern tool. Together, they create an object that transcends both categories — functional and timeless, digital yet artisanal. KASANE was conceived as more than a device: it is a bridge between heritage and innovation, designed for those who value both precision in work and beauty in life. In its form, tradition and modernity exist in harmony.

No two are ever alike.

Every keyboard carries both the artisan's touch and its history.

More than a device, it is a rare artifact, crafted to last, and made to be treasured.
